Between 2021 and 2025 he was the Director of Research at the Institute for Experiential AI of Northeastern University. Before he was VP of Research at Yahoo Labs from 2006 to 2016. He won the Spanish National Research Award Ángela Ruiz Robles given by SCIE and the BBVA Foundation in 2018 and the Chilean National Award on Applied and Technological Sciences in 2024. He has a Ph.D. in CS from the University of Waterloo, Canada. He is an ACM Fellow (2009) and IEEE Fellow (2011).
